About this tool

A VAT calculator works out Value Added Tax on a price - either adding VAT to a net amount or removing VAT from a gross amount to find the original price. It defaults to Nigeria's 7.5% standard rate but accepts any percentage, so it works for the UK (20%), South Africa (15%), the EU, and anywhere else.

Add VAT vs remove VAT

  • Add VAT - you have a price before tax and want the final amount a customer pays. The calculator shows the net, the VAT, and the gross total.
  • Remove VAT - you have a VAT-inclusive total (say, off a receipt) and want to know the tax portion and the original net price.

How VAT is calculated

To add VAT, multiply the net amount by the rate: at 7.5%, ₦10,000 × 0.075 = ₦750 VAT, giving a gross of ₦10,750. To remove VAT, divide the gross by (1 + rate): ₦10,750 ÷ 1.075 = ₦10,000 net, so the VAT was ₦750. Removing VAT is not the same as subtracting 7.5% from the gross - a common mistake this calculator avoids.

Who needs this

  • Small businesses pricing goods and issuing VAT invoices.
  • Freelancers and vendors quoting clients tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive prices.
  • Anyone checking the VAT portion of a bill or receipt.

Frequently asked questions

What is the VAT rate in Nigeria?

Nigeria's standard VAT rate is 7.5%. The calculator uses 7.5% by default, but you can change it to any rate for other countries.

How do I add VAT to a price?

Choose "Add VAT", enter the amount before tax and the rate. At 7.5%, ₦10,000 becomes ₦10,750 - that is ₦750 of VAT on top.

How do I remove VAT from a total?

Choose "Remove VAT" and enter the VAT-inclusive amount. The tool divides by 1 plus the rate to find the net price and the VAT portion. ₦10,750 at 7.5% gives ₦10,000 net and ₦750 VAT.

Why is removing VAT not just subtracting 7.5%?

Because the 7.5% was added to the smaller net amount, not the gross. Subtracting 7.5% from the gross overstates the deduction. Dividing by 1.075 gives the correct net figure.

Can I use it for other countries?

Yes. Just change the rate - for example 20% for the UK or 15% for South Africa. The maths works for any VAT or sales-tax percentage.

Are my numbers stored?

No. Everything is calculated locally in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
