About this tool

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a quick screening number that relates your weight to your height. This calculator works in both metric (cm/kg) and imperial (inches/lb) units and tells you which standard category your result falls into.

BMI categories

  • Under 18.5 — underweight
  • 18.5–24.9 — normal weight
  • 25–29.9 — overweight
  • 30 and above — obese

How BMI is calculated

In metric units, BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². In imperial units, BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)². For example, someone 1.70 m tall weighing 68 kg has a BMI of about 23.5 — within the normal range.

What BMI does and doesn't tell you

BMI is a useful population-level screening tool, but it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat or account for age, sex, and body composition. A very muscular person may read as "overweight" despite low body fat. Treat it as a rough guide and consult a health professional for a full assessment.

Your measurements are used only in your browser to compute the result and are never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How is BMI calculated?

In metric, BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. In imperial, BMI = 703 × weight in pounds ÷ height in inches squared.

What is a healthy BMI range?

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal weight. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

BMI is a general screening tool. It does not separate muscle from fat or account for age, sex, and body type, so athletes and some groups may get misleading results.

Can I use pounds and inches?

Yes. Switch to the imperial tab to enter height in inches and weight in pounds.

Is my data stored?

No. Your height and weight are used only in your browser and are never sent anywhere.
